There are hundreds of different types of nonprofits in the United States. At a high level, hospitals and universities are the biggest drivers in the sector by revenue and number of employees. Foundations are the most numerous, and also have the third most amount of assets.

Directory of nonprofits by category

Methodology: Cause IQ mines all tax-exempt organizations that file a Form 990 or 990PF with the IRS. We exclude Form 990EZ and Postcard filers, which are high in number but very small in size. We collect and aggregate this information from OCR'd paper taxreturns, XML e-file taxreturns, IRS-provided extract, the Business Master File, and Cause IQ secret sauce for data cleaning, categorization, classification, analytics, etc.
