Program areas at Faith Alliance for Climate Solution
Outreach - Expanded presence in Northern Virginia in order to reach a broader and more diverse segment of the faith community, including strengthening hubs in the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, Loudoun County, Fairfax County and the Northern Shenandoah Valley. Participated in actions jointly with community partners, such as rallies to support the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Co-hosted programs and events with community partners focused on environmental issues. Hosted annual Sustainability Champion Awards and Climate Crisis Forum events.
Advocacy - Convened advocacy teams in the local jurisdictions with a FACS hub and led by volunteers which meet monthly by webinar and are tasked with organizing meetings with their local elected officials twice annually. Build capacity of advocacy teams through training and development of talking points and other materials. Organize calls to action including petitions, public testimony, letters to the editor, participation in climate marches and rallies, etc. Build momentum and coalitions in support of FACS NOVA to Zero campaign to move Northern Virginia counties and cities to net zero emissions by 2050.
Education - Educating faith communities about the effects of climate change and how it disproportionately affects people of color, lower-income populations, and generally those that contribute to climate change the least. Over 400 people attended the sixth annual FACS Virginia Climate Crisis Forum in 2021 to discuss the impacts of climate change on our childrens future and local climate leadership. Hosting of webinars on topics such as environmental justice, advocacy training, and net zero carbon emission goals and solutions. Conducted energy justice workshops to train the faith community about energy justice issues and also how to perform simple, affordable energy upgrades in their homes in order to improve energy efficiency. Supported faith community green teams through capacity-building and knowledge-sharing.
