Nearby Nature

Nearby nature is an education group dedicated to fostering appreciation of nature nearby and providing tools for ecological living. Its staff and volunteers lead nature walks, host school programs, teach camps, run events, do restoration work, maintain a learnscape garden/outdoor classroom, teach network charter school classes, and serve as Eugene's Alton Baker Park host. Network charter school nearby nature offered classes throughout the academic year for the network charter school an alternative charter school serving students grades 7-12. These classes served the school's 110+ kids and included everything from nature literature to field biology to outdoor physical education to Oregon geography. NCS students also spent many hours on park restoration and gardening projects in Alton Baker Park and our learnscape Garden. School nature walks: 2,510+ children grades k-5 plus over 315 teachers and parents participated in our school nature walks in Alton Baker Park in 2015. 33+ volunteers assisted with these walks for a total of 1,138 hours. The value of this time (at the 2015 rate of $23.56/hour) is $26,811! Kids on these walks enjoyed hands-on adventures in nature nearby focused on one of several different themes -- river quest, critter quest, kalapuya quest, or nature detectives. Thanks to funds from the us Bancorp foundation, the Koons family foundation, the staples foundation for learning, and donors to our youth scholarship fund, 19% of the total number of kids who participated in this program in 2015 got scholarships ranging from 25% to 45.
