Program areas at VFW Department of Washington - 3063 Ballard-Eagleson Post
Relief: Veterans in immediate need are screened, and evaluated by a designated staff and funds are dispersed if required and within allowed limits. If a referral is appropriate, coordination occurs and a warm handoff is executed with the appropriate agency.
Community service: throughout the year members of the Post engage in service events of various types. The simplest being quarterly blood drives. The Post is a resource to the community hosting a library containing nearly one thousand books with diverse perspectives of war and its effects on those who participate. These are available to the public for loan. Discussions of the texts are possible with coordination. We host Veterans groups at no charge to use our hall, non-profit entities at nominal rents, and community organizations at rents substantially below comparable venues (no more than 10 occasions per year).
Veteran services: this local vfw Post, on average, assists over 100 Veterans per year in pursuit of just adjudication of their Veterans affairs claims related to their time in service. The va system is a vast bureaucratic edifice requiring assistance to successfully receive appropriate benefits. Many Veterans miss out on appropriated services or compensation due to the labyrinthian nature of the system. The vfw Post provides these services free of cost to the veteran and even dependents of the veteran. This service amounts to thousands of hours the Post must invest in remedy, from a dedicated service officer to facilities and other costs. Post volunteers visit the va hospital and other hospitals and retirement/nursing homes primarily to visit with Veterans.
Veteran solidarity network: the vfw Post is used as a place or refuge and connection for Veterans of Foreign Wars. Through monthly socials, meetings, and special programs, Veterans are given the tools to adjust to civilian life and to manage whatever traumas or experiences they are navigating. Our honor guard performs flag ceremonies and rifle salutes for veteran funerals and other community ceremonies.
