Program areas at Build Change

Asia pacific: in the philippines, Build Change is working with local microfinance partners to incentivize preventative home strengthening for women-led low-income families. Build Change is partnering with holcim to extend credit and technical assistance for climate-resilient housing, and explore the local market conditions for the use of lower-carbon cement. Build Change released an animated video on the power of housing investment in the hands of women. In indonesia, Build Change retrofitted school classrooms and partnered with the world bank group and the government of indonesia to deliver training and produce resilient construction manuals. In nepal, Build Change is partnering with npdrrm.
Innovations: Build Change released a seminal compilation of case histories, "saving embodied carbon through retrofitting existing housing", which documents the embodied carbon savings from retrofitting existing housing. For the same embodied carbon needed to Build a new house, we can retrofit three existing houses. This analysis concludes that 4.8 gigatons of co2 emissions could be saved while addressing more than 268 million inadequate houses globally. Build Change continues to implement the Build Change technical assistance platform (bctap) with multiple clients and partners worldwide. Build Change continues its positioning as trusted advisor to governments, lenders, and ngos.
Latin america & caribbean: exponential progress in colombia has led to the improvement of over 110,000 homes nationally to date. In 2023, colombia's minister of housing signed ais410-23, the first officially endorsed regulation for strengthening existing housing in informal neighborhoods. In 2023, the first phase of Build change-supported plan terrazas, bogota's second-story expansion and structural strengthening program, was completed. In honduras, in partnership with the honduran red cross, Build Change completed second-story expansions for families in flood-prone sula valley. In haiti, Build Change completed additional home repairs and retrofits. In mexico, Build Change is supporting disaster-resilient housing programs in partnership with conavi.
Africa, middle east and other related programs: Build Change is scaling up post-disaster reconstruction and technical assistance programs in turkiye, morocco, mozambique, and comoros.
