Creating effective parking for downtown: Jamaica first parking ("jfp"), an affiliate of gjdc, owns and operates parking in the downtown in order to reduce traffic and congestion, improve transportation, support local economic activity and development and attract visitors and shoppers. As the nonprofit owner of five parking facilities with 2,000 spaces in the downtown, jfp provides safe, attractive, affordably-priced parking to support economic and cultural activity in Jamaica. Jfp also provides enhanced downtown management services through its Jamaica alliance program. The alliance provides security horticulture, visitor's service and retail attraction and retention services to downtown Jamaica. The alliance's goal is to improve the perception of the area and stimulate retail sales and private investment jfp's recent retail attraction work has been particularly successful with several of its goals, including the opening of three sit-down restaurants. Improving infrastructure and beautifying public spaces: gjdc has played a key role in advocating and securing funding for large-scale transportation improvement projects funded primarily by the United States department of transportation under programs authorized by the transportation equity act for the 21st century and administered by the federal highway administration (FHWA) and the federal transit administration (fta). The overall goals of the projects are to increase pedestrian access and safety, improve traffic flow, accommodate increased speel plums aplland bus volumes, create new public open space and support economic revitalization.
