Turning the page empowers parents to become stronger educators of their children and leaders in their school community. We link teachers and students with resources to enhance their educational experience and performance. Provided 950+ public school parents in Washington, dc and in Chicago with skills, resources to become effective educators of their children at home and advocates for their 1700 children in school through workshops and author visits across 100+ community nights author visits and museum visits. In workshops, parents and teachers of pre-k through middle school students explored how to support their children's educational progress in school and at home. Topics included developing stronger parent-teacher relationships, tracking reading progress, social emotional learning, and stem subject engagement. While parents attend workshops, ttp volunteers lead students in educational activities. Special community night field trips for ttp's middle school families connected program participants to the Koshland museum and to the university of Maryland. Books were incorporated into all community night curricula and book distributions for families' home libraries concluded each event. Twenty-two community nights were author visits, where published children's or young adult book authors and illustrators share their writing and illustrating process and how parents can effectively inspire their children to love reading and learning. Parent leadership programming empowers parents and caregivers to drive tangible, sustainable positive changes in their school communities. Through four full-day conferences, across Washington, dc, and ongoing leadership support in 11 schools, during conferences, parents discussed school-based issues of importance, including how to grow leadership groups, implement community service projects, expand resources for their communities, and how to ensure public sector leaders understand and can act upon the challenges facing school communities. Conferences also spark ideas for parent-led school improvement and community-based projects that ttp also supports throughout the year. Recent projects in d.c. include community gardens, bullying prevention efforts, technology access, and addressing after-school program shortages and ada non-compliance.
