Program areas at The Uilani Fund
The U'ilani Fund gave away 129 grants to women with breast cancer to fund complementary care treatments that enhance their quality of life as they are going through chemo. Generally, women would not be able to fund these treatments as they are not covered by cancer. The non-profit was founded in 2001 to honor Marina 'U'ilani' Bremudez, a 41 year old physician from Hawaii, who passed away in June, 2000 in Santa Cruz, CA, after battling breast cancer for 3 years. During her cancer treatments, she found that complementary care like acupuncture, massage, and Chinese herbs greatly improved her quality of life while she was undergoing chemo. Since then, the fund has raised and subsequently given away over $450,000 in grants to women with breast cancer, giving grants to over 800 women since the organizations inception.
