John B. Pierce Laboratory, founded in 1933, affords a unique environment for interaction and collaboration among scientists within The Laboratory and in The surrounding yale community. Collaborations that reach across such wide-ranging fields as regulatory physiology, sensory and behavioral neuroscience, brain imaging, molecular biology and genetics place Pierce Laboratory scientists in a unique position to make breakthroughs in basic research that can be translated into improvements in human health and well-being. We currently have fourteen grants ongoing including: The study of tobacco product use and addiction through flavors, nicotine, and other constituents; bioluminescence interface for an all-optical neuroprosthesis to The visual cortex; non surgical brain computer interfaces; population imaging of action potentials by novel two-photon microscopes and genetically encoded voltage indicators; The study of mechanisms of hypertension in women with polycystic ovary syndrome; mechanisms and interventions addressing accelerated cardiovascular disease risk in women with endometriosis; multi-color optical voltage imaging of neural activity in behaving animals; The principles of olfactory-guided natural behavior.
