Strategic Learning Initiatives

Professional development (pd): the sli professional development team designs and delivers professional development workshops for teachers on various topics such as looking at student work, summarization, powerful reading strategies and powerful vocabulary strategies. In addition, the team supports teachers and onsite professional development coordinators through coaching, modeling and lesson design. In one network of schools, team members support teachers in the implementation of an eight-step instructional process, known as focused instruction, which focuses on raising student achievement in reading. The team also researches and designs lessons and other resources to share with the teachers.

Family engagement (fe): sli family engagement facilitators meet with each school principal and local school parent program coordinator to determine local school workshop topics and calendars. Workshops are designed and delivered by members of the sli family engagement team school site. All workshops include hands-on games and activities that parents can use to support their child's education.
