Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death of african american women. Though black women get breast cancer at a slightly lower incidence rate (3%) than white women, black women are 39% more likely to die of breast cancer than thite women. Annual wellness webinars - virtual webinars are held in partnership with the rutgers cancer institute of new jersey. The programs provided free breast health information, nutrition and the importance of exercise. Over 100 participants registered for the three week webinar series. Mammogram cards and follow up were provided to participants who requested additional information. Sister2sister continues to partner with the rwj community health education and provide free screening to local participants. Follow up is given to all particpants that need additional breast health information and/or show signs of health problems. The gift for life block walk and 5k breast cancer "run/walk 4life was combined. This year there were four hundred participants registered for the virtual / hybrid 5k walk. The 5k race/walk is an annual event held each year. The funds raised help to bring outreach and educational workshops to thousands of families in central new jersey. In addition to supporting many community breast health programs, funds raised fom this event support the organization's breast cancer assistance program bcap, which provies emergency breast cancer related services for qualified women during treatment. The organization conducts survivorship meetings on the second monday of each moth. Newly diagnosed woman are encourage to participate in discussions, ask question and voice concerns. Updates are given on treatment options, clinical trials and new research programs. During 2022 1,028 women were educated through the support meetings & outreach services. Women empowering women is normally an annual event designed for women leaders in the community. The organization partners with women in the community for a one day program that educates and empowers women to take the mission of the organization to their homes. It also honors one outstanding woman.
Organization provides financial assistance and support assistance for uninsured and underinsured women diagnosed with breast cancer. The breast cancer assistant program (bcap) provided over 22,000 in bcap financial services to women; services included, prosthetic items, meals, transportation trips for chemo treatments, food cards, rent, utilities and other emergency services.
