Program areas at Seattle-International District Rotary Club Foundation

The Empowering Teachers for STEM Education in Kenya is to improve the STEM skills of Kenyan teachers to better educate their students. The training inctuded effective lesson design, use of scientific tools and locally sourced materials and technology. The RV TRE Global Grant is a two-year grant that will be executed over three Rotary years; the year ended June 30, 2017 and those ending June 30, 2018 and 2019. ee ne een ener In 2017, seven training team members traveled to Kenya to work with local school teachers and students to apply the improved plans that were developed in the first training sessions held in the country. There were twelve trainings days held. Sixty-eight Kenyan teachers, from 18 schools were in the program (15 HS; 2 primary, 1 teaching college). The training was provided in four Parts; teacher as learner; teacher as planner; teacher as teacher, meeting with principals and parent representatives Pre-and post-training evaluations were administered to assess the teachers preceived preparadeness to engage and teach STEM students. The teachers reported significant leaning from the training. Between July 2017 and August 2018, local professional development meetings will be held to discuss student work. The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington State. LIHI also adminsters a range of supportive service programs to assist those they serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency. The Foundation provided funding for several Encampment sites which provides temporary housing and other services to homeless individuals and families. Generally, the encampments consist of tents, tiny houses and other interim living arrangements. The sites are one of the LIHI services available for homeless individuals LIHI provides services included assistance in moving to/from the sites, honey bucket rentals, transportation, food, hygiene items furniture, laundry services and site management. This is what the Foundation funding supported The Encampments are intended to provide short-term housing until other arrangements can be made for the residents. It is estimatec that during 2016-17 about 2,050 encampment tents and tiny houses are maintained by LIHI atthe sites
The Foundation funds college scholarships on a non-discriminatory basis in the Seattle WA area based on scholastic achievement community service and financial need. The children or other relatives of the Foundation's Directors, Officers, or Club Members are Rot eligible to apply for scholarships. The funds are paid to the college or university the student will attend For the year ended June 30, 2017, five $2,000 scholarships were awarded Each award recipient, along with his or her parents and high school counselor, is invited to a Club meeting to receive the scholarshig and talk Club members Foundation and Club Directors and Officers and Club members and their families are not eligible to apply for or receive educational scholarships. one
