Program areas at Proliteracy Worldwide / Montgomery County

Esl: trained tutors work with adults whose native language is not english, to improve their communication skills in order to meet the adult learner's goal(s). Goal(s) may include, but are not limited to the following; a) improve work place experience b) improve oral english speaking skills c) become able to communicate in english with child's teacher(s) d) to improve communication skills to enhance job pay e) to improve work/living /educational opportunities. Adult learners are recruited by distribution of flyers and through speaking engagements and the adult learners are retained in the program through an awards recognition program and feedback from them.
Tutor training: experienced tutors train new tutors through quarterly tutor training workshops. New tutors are recruited by distribution of flyers, speaking engagements. Psa's and news articles. The tutors are retained through an awards/recognition program and through feedback from them at tutor to tutor workshops.
Abe: trained tutors work with adults whose basic education impairs their ability to communicate using the written word. These adult learners work towards goals of their own choosing, including but not limited to reading items such as newspapers, bibles, work manuals, and prescriptions, improving job experience, improving pay and advancement and to help their child/children with homework and also to complete a pre-ged course of study.
