Program areas at National Child Labor Committee
The National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) provides services to promote the well-being of children and youth as they relate to work, working and education. In that capacity the organization works with private businesses, school systems, educational institutions, non-profit organizations that serve youth and leading youth advocates to improve and expand opportunities to ease the transition from school to work for young people, at-risk young people. Outreach programs include Kids And the Power Of Work (KAPOW) a business/elementary school partnership which currently serves approximately 40,000 children in states from Florida and Ohio to California.In addition NCLC, as it has been for over one hundred years since its founding in 1904, is a voice to prevent the exploitation of young children in the workplace whether thats in inner city sweatshops or on the farms of the nation. Equally important NCLC is developing a program to focus attention on the sexual exploitation of children and to help develop intervention models.The Committees Lewis Hine Awards program annually (since 1985) recognizes and honors unsung American heroes for their work with children in a broad variety of fields including health, education, recreation, social service, etc. Since its inception honorees from over 44 states and the Virgin Islands have been recognized, and their important and noteworthy work reinforced. More than 250 individuals have been so honored.
