Program areas at MLK Health And Wellness Community Development Corporation
Mlk-cdc has been working closely with the charles r. drew university of medicine and science ("cdu") on the acquisition of an adjacent property that will allow for expansion of classrooms, student housing, laboratories and an athletic field. Cdu is located within the MLK medical campus and is within walking distance of the jacqueline avant center and the MLK outpatient center and works closely with both in serving children in foster care and underserved populations. Mlk-cdc continues to work closely with cdu on the drew cares program -hiv prevention.
Mlk-cdc facilitated an annual grant of $25,000 for the MLK outpatient center ("mlk-opc") to continue Health screening outreach to vulnerable population for mammograms and pap smears. In 2025, mlk-opc demonstrated high achievement on reportable quality indicators of breast cancer screening in women between the ages of 50-75; and cervical cancer screening for women between the ages of 21-65. In addition, as part of its focus on breast and cervical cancer prevention, the monthly spa day service provided a total of 197 pap smears and 185 mammograms. The mlk-opc provided hiv testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis education. The mlk-opc served over 10,000 women's health-specific visits, which included over 5,000 mammograms, over 6,000 hematology/oncology appointments and over 900 chemotherapy infusions.
Mlk-cdc facilitated donations of over $10,000 for the needs of the MLK pediatric clinic located in the jacqueline avant children and family center ("jac") for purchase of children's books and events held. In 2025, mlk-cdc focused on the consolidation of mental Health services for children and teens that will now be provided in the jac. In addition to mental Health services, the newly renovated third floor will include a children's trauma center. Mlk-cdc purchased furniture for the space. Expanded mental Health services for children in foster care will be provided by the new center. During the year, services were provided to approximately 4,500 children and teens in foster care.
