Program areas at Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake
In fiscal year 2023, 333 volunteers drove 55,440 miles and donated 9,960 hours of their time and 2,183 gallons of fuel to deliver 71,480 meals and 35,740 safety checks and moments of social connection to 300 participants. Over two-thirds of participants struggle to make ends meet, and 24,378 meals (34%) were provided by grants and donations. Thanks to our supportive services, participants report increased nutrition, wellbeing, safety, and economic stability, as well as decreases in isolation, malnourishment, and hunger. Donations and volunteers are needed to sustain this program.
Recognizing the vital role that pets play in social wellbeing, Meals on Wheels implemented a new social connection program, PAWS(Pets Aiding the Wellbeing of Seniors) in FY 2023, with grant funding provided by Meals on Wheels America and PetSmart. 65% of participants who benefit from PAWS are low-income, and all of them struggle to make ends meet. In FY 2023, volunteers and staff coordinated the delivery of over 3,000 pounds of pet food, cat litter, puppy pads, and flea/tick collars. MOWC also partnered with area mobile veterinarian Golden Paws, who provided exemplary care, as well as a generous 23% discount on all services. Most pets had not been to the vet in years. Donations and volunteers are needed to sustain this program.
