Program areas at Coherent Development
Summer programsduring the summer of 2023, cdri hosted middle school summer programs in three cities: san diego, pasadena, and san pablo. A total of 95 middle school students participated. Additionally, 38 high school and college-age youth were trained and engaged as tutors and coordinators of the summer programs. The total program hours across the three sites was 186 hours. Participants strengthened language and math abilities through study; they played sports and learned crafts. The program was offered free of charge and targeted under-served neighborhoods in large urban centers. The academic tutors were youth from these same neighborhoods. They were given small stipends. In san diego, the program was offered as part of the level up enrichment opportunities available in collaboration with san diego unified school district.
Academic tutoringcdri offers academic tutoring to middle school students to enhance their intellectual abilities and address educational achievement gaps associated with socio-economic status. During 2023, 80 students participated in cdri tutoring in san diego, pasadena, and san pablo. Tutoring took place multiple days per week on school grounds and at community centers.
Internship programover the course of 2023, cdri engaged 31 high school and college youth in its year-long internship program. The program aims to raise capacity in young people to contribute meaningfully to the progress and Development of their communities. Interns receive training, mentorship, and a scholarship while engaged in action-research in their communities. During 2023, interns developed capacity by offering academic tutoring to middle school students.
