Program areas at Child Abuse Prevention Program
Child safety workshops: primarily focused on Prevention, these workshops teach children to recognize, resist and report Abuse. The Program is unique in that it not only educates children about physical and sexual Abuse, but also affords children that have already experienced Abuse an immediate opportunity to ask for help from a trained professional. In 2014, capp conducted 120 workshops for 12,266 children in 87 nyc schools. Capp received 741 Abuse disclosure statements from children; 120 Abuse reports were made to ny state central register and 118 families were referred for intervention services.
Children's clothes closet: being removed from an abusive environment can be very scary for a Child. In response, capp created the children's clothes closet. The clothes closet is stocked with clothing, toiletries, toys, books, and other necessities to fill overnight bags for children being moved to safer situations. Capp has partnered with the safe horizon jane barker brooklyn Child advocacy center (cac) since 1999. Capp also operates children's clothes closets at the safe horizon cac's in manhattan, queens and staten island. In 2014, the clothes closet provided supplies for 50-70 children per each borough of new york. In may 2014, responsibility for the children's clothes closet was transferred to safe horizon.
Professional training for school guidance counselors and social workers: in order to have their school qualify to receive a capp workshop, schools' representatives participate in capp's professional training for guidance counselors. The Program is also appropriate for and has been used to train other professionals including teachers, police detectives, nurses, district attorneys, and Child protection workers. Participants receive the most recent information on Abuse, sex offender typology and treatment, Abuse perpetrated on the internet, and family violence; additionally they are instructed on how to handle Abuse disclosure statements from children, interviewing skills and reporting procedures. In 2014, capp trained 180 nyc professionals.
