Program areas at Carmel Film Festival
Film Festival Program The Carmel International Film Festival provides a platform and stage for hundreds of independent filmmakers and brings many of them together for a five-day community celebration of their artistic accomplishments. Although the five-day festival is focused on screening independent film, the Carmel International Film Festival also includes educational seminars designed to help young and upcoming filmmakers further their careers. The objective of these educational panels is twofold: help young filmmakers navigate an increasingly difficult media/film landscape, and provide insight on how to collaborate effectively to bring a project to fruition. Making films is hard, and it requires a broad skill set to be successful. We strive to provide education on some of those skills. We estimate that we reach hundreds of filmmakers, students and other industry professionals. Exempt purpose Achievemnets:Celebrating Women in Film While female focused, the Carmel International Film Festivals Celebration of Women in Film is not exclusive to women. The goal is to highlight creative women from a variety of fields, identify areas where women can help each other grow and succeed in their respective fields, and promote and lobby for gender equality. Every year there is a different theme and associated screening, but always with the underling goal of supporting and promoting women. This includes bringing in accomplished women to share their knowledge and insight. The Carmel International Film Festival has a robust fellowship program, partnering with students from Hara Motion Picture Conservatory. The students get hands on experience in the organization and execution of a five-day film festival. The students also conducted 19 filmmaker spotlight interviews. The students were responsible for all facets of the project including pre-production, filming, interviewing, editing and post production. Working with California State University Monterey Bay, the Carmel International Film Festival also trains and deploys student ambassadors who are responsible for introducing films and moderating question and answer sessions with filmmakers after a screening. In order to facilitate a lively discussion, the students are required to conduct research on their assigned films and filmmakers, and project confidence in public speaking. The program has been hugely successful and we are expanding the number of students involved every year. The goal of both these programs, as well as our internship position is to introduce young people to the inner workings of a complicated event from the business side to the creative, as well as boost confidence and speaking skills and hone skills that can be used in future careers. The expenses for the Fellowship and Student Ambassador Program was $1,000.00 for food that was provided to the students. The Carmel International Film Festival is a five-day festival celebrating and promoting the art of Independent film: 8,000 attendees, 130 filmmakers, more than 100 participating films, from around the world, panel discussions, and educational and student programs. Film is an incredibly powerful medium that can bring people together for a collective experience that ultimately can educate, inspire and elevate an entire community. We are proud to offer that stage to filmmakers and our community offering an artistic experience that is unique to the festival. Since its inception in 2008, the festival has grown from fledgling to flourishing: 10 films screened in year one compared to 130 screened in year eight, hundreds of audience participants to thousands, and from a dozen attending filmmakers to 130. The numbers improve exponentially every year. The Carmel International Film Festival is also committed to helping and promoting filmmakers. Making a film is a difficult endeavor that requires skill, resources and a faith that it will find an audience. Helping filmmakers do that, nurturing that creative spirit, is part of the mission of the Carmel International Film Festival. And with that commitment comes education and outreach to students who will be the next generation of artists. The community of Carmel, California has a rich artistic history, and with a growing economic and artistic impact, the Carmel International Film Festival strives to be a lasting part of that legacy.
