Program areas at Buena Vista Heritage
This year has been thrilling in regards to grants and the massive projects we have been able to undertake because of them. We have four in varying stages, which is impressive for a small organization, considering that Buena Vista Heritage has to provide a percentage of matching funds to receive these grants. Memberships, donations, and event fundraisers significantly impact our ability to accomplish this goal. There are more details below, but to summarize, the grants are: 1. Completed window and entry door grant: 71,268.00 2. Micro-grant covering surprise issues with the entry doors: 7,775.00 3. Window restoration & courtroom rehabilitation: 287,064.00 4. Shf grant application submitted on october 1, 2022 the window and entry door grant began in late 2020 but wasn't completed until this summer when we installed the long back-ordered panic hardware on our front doors. Unfortunately, this created a new set of problems: the doors wouldn't lock. After a series of adjustments, the doors finally latched, but regrettably, they latched too well, and we could not release them from the outside. It turns out the century-old pine doors were completely and irretrievably warped. After a summer of entering through the side and opening the front doors from the inside, we received a grant for new doors. The new doors will visually replicate the current ones and utilize the historic glazing and the hardware we just installed this summer, but will be constructed from sustainably sourced mahogany instead of pine. We would like to thank sangre de cristo electric association for their generous donation that helped us cover this unexpected cost. Our largest grant was awarded by the Colorado state historical fund in december 2021 to renovate/restore the courtroom. Bvh had previously restored two of the courtroom's windows, but now we are completing the remaining seven the windows were completely removed and taken to a workshop in fort collins for restoration, but they were back in place by opening day.
