The goal of the award ceremony is to refocus the lens through which the Black LGBTQ community is seen and perceived by showcasing examples of courage, leadership and excellence. Held annually, the award ceremony also supports scholarships provided to LGBTQ youth attending college and vocational programs. The award ceremony averages 400 attendees, 1.5 million social media impressions, and garners national media attention. Since 2020, the award ceremony has been broadcast nationally on the Fox Soul network and viewed by its 44 million subscribers.
Quarterly, BBLA sponsors a series of facilitated discussions where expert panelist provide attendees with information on a host of issues. Topics have included mental health, Covid-19/Monkey Pox Vaccination, and family related social services. These engagements allow individuals to meet and share common experiences and reinforce a sense of community while continuing to be responsive to health concerns and whole person care.
To increase scholarships for LGBTQ+ youth, each year a fundraiser is held where attendees attend a dinner gathering. Former scholarship recipients attend and provide attendees with an update of their educational/academic pursuits and thank attendees for their contributions. Attendees: 100
