Hfst and awards: afavh provides service to the Alexander Von humboldt foundation (avh) to support and secure the future of an active u.s. humboldt alumni network, engaging over 5,500 us researchers and professionals in intellectual and professional exchanges. In response to covid, afavh adapted its 5-year board-led outreach initiative to engage u.s. humboldt alumni through in-person and virtual activities. In 2021 afavh: (i) met with four alumni in chicago, and met with a dozen alumni around the country via zoom and telephone; (ii) advertised research fellowships and awards in webinars and through email and social media; (iii) presented information on german research opportunities at 8 virtual scientific meetings; and (iv) participated in the avh's new mobility conference and virtual annual meeting.
Alumni support and outreach for the german chancellor fellowship program (buka): afavh provides service to avh to support the over 300 u.s. Alumni of the german chancellor fellowship for young leaders in business, public policy, public administration, and arts and culture.in 2021, afavh: (i) collected and disseminated alumni stories to showcase the professional impact of the fellowship; (ii) advertised the program through email promotions-to our alumni network of 5,000 as well as to 5,000 fellowship advisors, educators, and company representatives-social media, and participation in 6 career fairs; (iii) provided potential candidates information on the application and selection process; and (iv) hosted a virtual alumni meeting of the u.s. german chancellor fellows, with select fellows from china, russia, brazil, and india also in attendance; (v) assisted the network of brazilian german chancellor fellows with the organization of their alumni meeting planned for 2022; (vi) reached out to over 75 hbcus and msis with program information in the first phase of an initiative to encourage black americans and other minorities to apply to avh programs to advance af's goal of greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the u.s. Alumni network and also cultivated a relationship with the city university of new york to promote the program in the diverse cunynetwork.
Strategic planning-outreach: afavh provides service to avh in the delivery of measures to raise the visibility of the humboldt foundation and alumni network, forge new strategic partnerships, and facilitate transatlantic exchanges on science and science policy. In 2021, afavh: (i) sent 3 issues of the connect e-newsletter to over 5,000 alumni and partners; (ii) sent out 22 issues of the bimonthly newsletter, Friends & forschung, to 5,000 alumni and partners to help alumni remain connected to germany, german research, and the german language; (iii) shared information on the humboldt network and international science cooperation at invited or public events, including those of the acs, aacr, aaai, aps, sfn, gcri, ascb, society for women engineers, german academic international network, german consulates (new york and san francisco), german research foundation, and the national academy of sciences; (iv) reached out to over 150 representatives at historically black colleges and universities (hcbus) and minority serving institutions (msis) about avh programs; (v) maintained a strong social media presence to share humboldtians' accomplishments and information on german research; and (vi) informed senior international and research administrators at u.s. Universities.
American Friends: aafavh programs serve the u.s. humboldt alumni network and u.s. scientific and professional community. In 2021, afavh: (i) through donations to the afavh annual fund, distributed the American Friends annual report, strata, to over 5,000 alumni and other recipients; (ii) produced three issues of the new e-newsletter, connect, sent to alumni in the united states and around the world; (iii) collected 2 narratives ("humboldt stories") to showcase the diversity and excellence of the alumni on the af website; (v) with the support of a major gift from professor william calder, awarded 4 new and renewed 3 william m. calder iii fellowships to promote german-american exchange in the classics.outreach for the Alexander Von humboldt professorship in artificial intelligence (ahp-ki): afavh provides services to the Alexander Von humboldt foundation by disseminating information about the new Alexander Von humboldt professorship in artificial intelligence (ahp-ki) to alumni, partners, and other key multipliers in the united states. Afavh has i) used targeted print, digital, and social media campaigns to activate the u.s. humboldt alumni network and encourage other partner organizations to disseminate program information to their respective professional networks; and ii) attended the annual aaai conference to market the program to potential candidates in academia and industry.
