Program areas at American Federation of Government Employees - AFGE Local 1658
The Officers and Stewards of Local 1658 continued to provide Representational Services to bargaining unit employees and non-bargaining unit employees on a daily basis in FY 2022. We were continuously successful ensuring that employees were treated fairly and equitably by using both formal established procedures as well as employing informal processes. We were able to consistently obtain successful results in resolving labor-management disputes. We also frequently took proactive steps to prevent issues from becoming problems for employees.
AFGE Local 1658 pursues aggressive Legislative Action on behalf of employees that we represent. The Local had several Representatives attend the annual AFGE Legislative Conference in Washington D.C. where we met with all Michigan Members in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. There we presented the Local's position on numerous issues that are critical to federal employees such as pay job security working conditions and Union Rights. Local 1658 Representatives made frequent follow-up visits to our Congressional Representatives and Senators in Michigan to ensure that they remained up to date and focused on issues impacting federal employees.
In April of 2022 AFGE Local 1658 initiated Negotiations on a new Labor-Management Agreement that had stalled during the Covid Pandemic. After a delay caused by management regular negotiation sessions with management began in October 2022 and the parties met weekly after that until the end of the year except for holiday weeks. Substantial progress was made in crafting a new Agreement for the bargaining unit employees we represent. In addition Local 1658 frequently was required to negotiate smaller Memorandum of Agreements on issues that arose that were not specifically covered in the existing Labor-Management Agreement.
