Program areas at YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Y youth programs are designed to create a sense of belonging and foster positive behaviors while instilling core values and character traits. These life-enhancing initiatives empower young individuals to discover their purpose and unleash their full potential. The Taylor family (Trealla, Trayveon, & Travis) seized the opportunity to attend Camp Potawotami through a scholarship, resulting in transformative experiences. Trealla's self-confidence blossomed, and he found his voice, while Trayveon embraced new challenges and pushed his boundaries. Travis, on the other hand, honed his problem-solving skills and cultivated patience within himself. The shared journey at Camp Potawotami brought the Taylor family even closer together. At camp, kids gain valuable insights and skills to overcome obstacles and adopt healthier lifestyles, paving the way for promising futures ahead. YMCA youth programs are a catalyst for growth, connection, and preparation for the endless opportunities that lie ahead. In 2022, the YMCA granted $902,629 in program financial assistance to 5,089 individuals, further illustrating their commitment to inclusivity and community support.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: The YMCA is resolutely committed to forging a future where every individual is given the opportunity to learn, thrive, and flourish. This commitment to social responsibility is reflected in the story of identical twins, Chloe and Sophie, part of the YMCA community. Their early academic journey was turbulent, marked by frequent absenteeism-they missed a staggering 110 out of 180 school days. On the rare days they attended, verbal and physical confrontations with school staff and peers were commonplace. Reliance on each other to navigate their school anxiety led to their academic downfall-failing classes, lagging in credits, and getting suspended. Enter Chelsi Lawson, a Youth Advocate from the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne's Status Offender Court Alternative Program (SOCAP). Chelsi focused on forging a trusting relationship with Chloe and Sophie, arranging counseling services, and collaborating with the school to devise a personalized academic and behavioral blueprint for them. Equipped with newfound skills, the twins' relationship transformed-they began supporting each other constructively. Regular school attendance and dedicated studying followed, steering them back on the graduation path. Inspired, they now aspire to pursue further education and careers in holistic medicine. Such transformative experiences are at the heart of Y's youth programs. We're dedicated to nurturing a sense of belonging, fostering skills, and promoting character development to instill positive behaviors.
HEALTHY LIVING: The Y is dedicated to enhancing the nation's overall health and well-being through a range of programs and activities that foster wellness, mitigate the risk of diseases, and aid individuals in reclaiming their health. Guided by the mission 'To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all,' the Y remains committed to the betterment of both individuals and the community as a whole. A core aspect of YMCA service revolves around supporting families, exemplified through Bob's story. Having considered the YMCA as his extended family since high school, Bob has always been actively involved with the Y. When he faced life-threatening complications from COVID-19, it was no surprise that the Central Branch YMCA members rallied around him, offering abundant support and prayers. Bob found solace and hope in the thoughtful cards he received during this challenging time, reinforcing the close-knit community that the Y fosters. Beyond emotional support, the Y also provides various programs catered to individuals and families seeking to embark on or sustain healthier lifestyles. Among these offerings are Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring, Enhanced Fitness, Livestrong at the YMCA, and Diabetes Prevention programs. However, financial barriers can hinder some from accessing programs and membership opportunities. In order to better serve the community, in 2022 alone, the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne contributed $2,100,748 in financial aid to 33,858 individuals, enabling them to enjoy the benefits of Y membership.
