Program areas at YMCA of Greater Cleveland
Health and Wellness In 2022, the Y provided a variety of programs well beyond typical exercise that were designed to nurture a healthy spirit, mind and body for people of all ages. Thousands of older adults participated in programs designed to improve performance of activities of daily life, to increase balance and avoid falls, to enhance cardiovascular health, and even to provide educational and social events designed to combat loneliness and depression. Hundreds of adults with chronic diseases upgraded their lifestyles through programs that taught healthy eating, increased lifestyle activity, and managed disease risk. The Y's water safety and swimming programs focused on drowning prevention while teaching essential skills to help both youth and adults stay safe and develop confidence around water. The Y's sports programs provided thousands of youth opportunities to learn teamwork in an environment that intentionally taught caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Social Responsibility: Y-Haven provides temporary housing, substance use disorder and mental health treatment, and other critical services to women and men who are experiencing homelessness, re-entering the community from incarceration and seeking to recover from opioid use disorder. Y-Haven worked to reduce the likelihood of overdose in the client population through the provision of safe housing, high-quality treatment, vocational support, and other needed services. In 2022, Y-Haven provided temporary housing and substance use disorder treatment to 666 adults. Sixty-one percent of residents completed 90 days of intensive outpatient treatment, 80% obtained employment or training (less those receiving SSI/SSDI or engaged in intensive outpatient treatment), and 58% of those who exited the program secured permanent housing. Community Impact Sixty-two percent of our service delivery benefits individuals with low to moderate incomes. Over $600,000 in financial assistance was provided. We were delighted to provide 98 foster families with free membership. Our branches provided tens of thousands of pounds of food to those in need in their communities. More than 1,500 senior citizens joined in our bus and air travel trips, helping us to fight isolation in the senior population. Our West Shore branch instituted Tri-at-the-Y, an accessible mini tri-antiholon event that will be repeated in 2023. Every branch addressed local community needs in a variety of ways.
Youth Development Our Youth Development programs are rapidly returning to pre-COVID activity. In 2022, we served 7,450 children in our various programs. For example, we served 785 kids per day in our before-and-after-school (Y-Club) and pre-school programs. Nearly 2,000 children participated in our Junior Cavs program. Our summer camps served 675 children in day, sports and fine arts camps. We also taught thousands of kids and teens to swim. We were delighted to expand our Teen Leaders and Teen Cafe programs, providing positive and productive activities along with leadership training. Our We Run This City youth marathon program, a staple in the Warrensville Heights area, was welcomed by Lakewood City Schools District with the program beginning in 2023. For all of our youth development programs, we provided need-based scholarships to make our programs more affordable. To determine how to allocate scholarships, we use several factors, such as the annual income of the applicant, the number of adults in the home, and the number of dependents.
