Program areas at The Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology

The Wistar Institute takes a collaborative, team approach to pursuing new biomedical research discoveries that can be translated into next-generation therapeutics and diagnostics through meaningful partnerships. The Institute's research enterprise is organized into two main centers: The Wistar Institute cancer center, which has held The national cancer Institute (nci)-designation since 1972, and The vaccine & immunotherapy center. Wistar scientists benefit from The technological support and state-of-the-art instrumentation provided by The Institute's shared resources. Wistar researchers and collaborators continue to make significant, cutting-edge insights into The underlying mechanisms of disease to create new targeted therapies and immunotherapies for cancer. Wistar has a proven record of success in vaccine development that has led to vaccines against rubella, rabies, and rotavirus. In response to The covid-19 pandemic, Wistar scientists are researching innovative preventative and therapeutic solutions for sars-cov-2, including a vaccine developed with collaborators in academia and biotech that is phase 2 clinical testing. In line with its historic commitment to education and training of The next generation of scientists, Wistar has launched new collaborations with local and international institutions with The goal of expanding life science education and business development opportunities in Pennsylvania and beyond. Wistar has a robust range of stem-based programming focused on increasing access for under-represented populations throughout The area. Wistar's educational outreach includes apprenticeships, pathways programming, and community outreach to support stem-based and biomedical research career opportunities.
