Program areas at Wingspan Arts
Wingspan Arts Afterschool program, Club Wingspan, has been in operation since 2001, when founded in response to lack of arts education in public schools. Wingspan has aimed to create a safe, fun, and enriching afterschool experience for elementary-aged students by offering multi-disciplinary arts classes taught by professional artist educators. This last year, our afterschool program offered 90-minute enrichment classes with an emphasis on the core four artistic disciplines Visual Art, Drama, Music, and Dance. Each Wingspan Arts class works toward a final presentation, performance or exhibition that represents the skills students acquire and master throughout the semester.Wingspan Arts provides custom in-school arts residencies designed to meet the needs of participating K-12 schools. With a variety of designed programs, Wingspans current in-school residencies range from providing elective arts classes to integrated arts programming. All of Wingspan in-school residencies grow from a creative, collaborative process between Wingspan Arts and the School Partner, based on the core artistic disciplines Theatre, Music, Dance, and Visual Art. During the planning stages, Wingspan works with school administrators to design each program for its corresponding grade level based on state and national standards, in addition to specific arts standards such as those outlined in The New York City Blueprint for the Arts. Wingspan Teaching Artists, in collaboration with classroom teachers, work with students in a variety of creative disciplines during their academic day. Residencies can range from 8 weeks to a full school year, and have served around 2,000 students each year.
