Program areas at WildAid
Enforcing marine protected areas:the Wildaid marine program designs effective enforcement solutions to deter illegal fishing and strengthen the protection of priority marine areas for the benefit of endangered wildlife, marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal communities. In 2023, we continued making progress towards our goal of strengthening enforcement in 250 conservation-critical marine areas by 2025 and reached a total of 96 sites. We helped expand enforcement coverage from 3 to 10 mpas in cuba to safeguarding the caribbean's most pristine coral reefs, continued efforts to create sustainable financing for enforcement of the galapagos marine reserve, and celebrated successful sea turtle conservation efforts in coastal ecuador.
Inspiring climate action:our climate action programs empower individuals in china and the united states to live sustainable, low-carbon lifestyles. In china, our "every climate action counts: the power is yours!" Campaign encourages young people to visit the interactive "climate action inspiration station" (a new website embedded in weibo and wechat) to share their own climate actions and create a custom poster for social media. Similarly, in the us "the environment excuse" campaign educates and motivates average americans to fulfill their role in reducing carbon emissions within their everyday lives.
Ending the trade in wildlife products:our "say no to shipping illegal wildlife products" campaign deters consumers across china from considering purchasing wild animal products and for the parcel delivery service industry to take an active role in preventing this form of illegal trade. The government has identified online trade and fulfillment via parcel delivery issue as a top wildlife crime priority. In vietnam, our bushmeat-free tourism communications campaign showcases protected species on billboards and posters with a qr code link to our website with infographics about the species protected under the national wildlife protection law to promote sustainable and humane tourism.our shark fin campaign in thailand has helped to reduce shark fin consumption by 34% since 2016 amounting to a decrease of 8.2 million servings of shark fin per year.
