Successfully completed the 50th annual Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run in June 2023. Increased worldwide engagement with over 31 hours of continuous livestream broadcast with 530,000 views globally from 122 countries. There were 320 finishers with a finish rate of 86.5%. Improved runner tracking with Starlink internet satellite connections to augment runner safety.
Financed a medical study at the 2023 Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run entitled: "Acute and Chronic Effects of Ultramarathon Participation on Vascular Health" conducted by researchers from the Biodynamics and Human Performance Laboratory at Georgia Southern University. The results of this study will be published in medical journals for the benefit of the medical community, runners and the general public.The WSER Foundation hosted a pre-race medical conference at Palisades Tahoe with 40 attendees. The Foundation's Medical Director presented zoom conferences to discuss medical issues of concern for WSER entrants and published a case report entitled "Four Cases of Acute Kidney Injury Requiring Dialysis in Ultramarathoners" in the 2023 Journal of Wilderness & Environmental Medicine.
Completed the first year of a multi-year project with US Forest Service to re-route and improve 6 miles of the Western States trail in the Granite Chief Wilderness Area, a federally designated Wilderness Area. Successfully completed annual trail work on 100 miles of the Western States trail using our volunteer steward program, a partnership between Western States Endurance Run Foundation, US Forest Service, Auburn State Recreation Area and Western States Trail Foundation, modeled after the Pacific Crest Trail Association.Worked in partnership with the US Forest Service, Auburn State Recreation Area and the Western States Trail Foundation, to restore 16 miles of trail damaged in the Mosquito fire in the fall of 2022. Included both financial commitment from WSER and coordinated volunteer work on trail.
