86th street food pantrywest Side Campaign Against Hunger ("wscah") is one of the largest emergency food providers in nyc and has been at the forefront of innovation for over 41 years, developing the first customer-choice supermarket-style pantry in the united states. Wscah works to change the perception of hungry people by providing food with dignity, while committing to procuring food based on the usda myplate, providing new yorkers in need access to the healthiest and highest quality food.
Social services wscah recognizes that food insecurity is a multifaceted issue, and many factors might contribute to why one is food insecure. These include lack of access to affordable housing, unemployment, health issues, education, work experience, and immigration issues. In response, wscah created its social services department to provide customers with a comprehensive suite of benefits, including snap (food stamps) & health insurance sign-ups, to aid our customers on their paths to self-sufficiency.
Mobile food pantrywscah created its mobile market program (mmp) in october 2017 to serve a larger population and provide services for those that cannot easily access our 86th street food pantry. The mmp partners with a variety of organizations including health centers, senior centers, elected officials, and religious institutions to bring healthy food and support services directly to neighborhoods with high food insecurity rates in all five boroughs, creating reliable access points for healthy food and supportive resources.
