Water For People is a international humanitarian organization based in Denver, CO that was founded in 1991. As of 2019 they had $19 million in revenue and $14 million in assets.
Water For People exists to promote the development of high quality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all, and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments.
In india, we work to improve access to Water and sanitation services and build the capacities of communities and local governments to operate and maintain these services. India operations began in west bengal, and have since expanded to reach 27 districts in west bengal, bihar, maharashtra, tamil nadu, assam, and odisha. In addition to supporting tube wells and piped Water projects, we have installed drinking and handwashing stations in schools, and rehabilitated or constructed sanitation facilities. We also played a role in the removal of arsenic and other contaminants from Water, reducing water-related health risks in the communities. We directly reached 35,772 individuals with improved Water services, 51,011 with improved sanitation services, and 35,772 with hygiene education.
In africa, we focus on improving access to reliable Water services in seven everyone forever districts in malawi, rwanda, and uganda through piped Water supply systems, new boreholes, and rehabilitation of existing Water points. We have also supported an enabling environment for sanitation by supporting entrepreneurs and market-based solutions. Pit-emptying businesses are thriving, and decentralized fecal sludge treatment plants are expanding. We have been strengthening local partnerships to improve sustainability while increasing coverage. The everyone forever model has been replicated by other ngos and is gaining regional and national momentum. In 2019, we directly reached 123,859 individuals with new or improved Water services, 430,644 with improved sanitation services, and 208,448 with hygiene education.
In latin america, we focus on improving access to Water and sanitation services in 19 everyone forever (ef) districts, while simultaneously building the capacity of communities to manage those systems. Along with local partners, we also work to stimulate demand for improved sanitation solutions through awareness-raising activities and the cultivation of local sanitation businesses to meet consumer demand. Even as we continue to prove the everyone forever model at the local level, we are working to advise national governments and help develop programs for sustainable services at a national level. In 2019, we directly reached 20,168 individuals with new or improved Water services, 24,658 with improved sanitation services, and 18,455 with hygiene education in both ef and non-ef districts.
