Outreach and education - Vision Y Compromiso has provided outreach and education, training, leadership development, advocacy, and workforce development programs for promotoras, community health workers and other grassroots community leaders for over 20 years. A predominantly women-led workforce, promotoras provide servicio de corazn (service from the heart) as trusted members of traditionally underserved communities. Critical links to reliable information, they connect community members to local resources and public health, social service, education, housing, and legal systems to advance equity, address the social determinants of health and improve community health outcomes. Vision Y Compromiso's outreach and education programs, led by community-based promotoras, engage low-income, spanish speaking and immigrant communities in urban and rural regions throughout California to share information and resources on a variety of topics including: prevention and management of chronic disease (diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease), mental health (prevention education, early intervention and navigation to mental health services), covid-19 and vaccine promotion, parent leadership, navigating health and other systems, disaster preparedness and extreme heat, substance use, and more.
Training and education - Vision Y Compromiso has provided training and education to promotoras, community health workers and other grassroots community leaders for over 20 years. Using popular education methodology, our skilled trainers develop and deliver culturally and linguistically relevant core skills and content-specific training curricula that give promotoras the information, skills and understanding they need to communicate with and advocate for their communities on issues important to individuals and families including health and wellness, education, immigration, systems navigation, etc. Our core skills training promotoras transformando familias Y comunidades (ptfc)/promotoras transforming families and communities builds promotoras' skills to effectively engage with community members, understand their role in improving health and wellness, facilitate group formation and improve public speaking skills. Other trainings include, but are not limited to: advocacy and leadership, suicide prevention, workforce readiness, mental health first aid, bailoterapia instructors training, serving from the heart-an organizational readiness symposium, promotoras/chws in medi-cal, and more.
Network - the core of our work, Vision Y Compromiso's network of promotoras (network) is a forum for promotoras, community health workers and other grassroots community leaders to exchange information and gain skills to advance equity and reduce health disparities for the most vulnerable members of their communities. Powered by promotoras and their love for the community and the work they do, the network represents thousands of community-connected leaders in regions across California and a growing number of states. Working locally in regional comits, promotoras empower community residents, advocate on behalf of local needs, and partner with vital social services in diverse sectors of the California economy. Through the network, Vision Y Compromiso delivers ongoing training and professional development to build promotoras' leadership, knowledge and skills, validate their role as key experts in their community, and share best practices related to community health (including calaim and changes to medicaid). To improve health outcomes and ensure that the voices of historically marginalized communities are represented, the network builds promotoras' skills to advocate and participate fully in federal, state and local decision making that is relevant to their workforce.
