Program areas at Velocity Dance Center
Studio/Theater Operation and On-Going Classes: Velocity provides a wide variety of drop-in classes, dance series, master classes, and workshops, both for the professional dance community and the general public. In 2019, Velocity provided 25 master classes and workshops, 27 ongoing drop-in classes, 5 Intro Series classes, which provided high-quality dance instruction for 23,000 community members and dancers. Velocity also provides a performance platform for emerging and established dance artists, largely from Seattle; in 2019 we produced 41 shows, serving over 3,000 audience members.
Made in Seattle: Made in Seattle is an incubator program which provides development, production, and professional career support to artists through a year-long residency that includes 180 hours of free rehearsal space, a commissioning fee, administrative support, and professional development support. 2019s MIS artists were Ella Mahler and Mark Haim, whose shows were seen by 700 audience members.
Summer Festivals - Velocity's Summer Festivals (Strictly Seattle and Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation) are yearly festivals which attracts participants from all over the United States. The first is a three-week dance intensive led by Seattle teachers, which includes rehearsals, development workshops, and a public performance. SFDI is the leading national convening for dance, comprising of a week-long intensive of workshops and performance. In 2019, the summer festivals included 26 events, which attracted 1,900 participants.
