the 2019-2020 season represented for tapa its first full season as a newly merged organization. Before the season was cut short in march 2020 by the covid-19 pandemic, it had already achieved many high points for the organization. This included performances with violinist itzhak perlman, pianist olga kern, and singer/songwriter ben folds. In november 2019, tapa welcomed brett loney, j.d., afcre as director of development. He brings decades of fundraising expertise to the organization and a clear strategy to enhance contributed income.february 2020 brought the Toledo symphony and Toledo ballet together in a new production of carl orff's carmina burana. With new choreography and dancers from Toledo ballet, an expanded Toledo symphony, and combined choruses from bowling green state university, the sold-out weekend celebrated tapa's two artistic faces in epic sonic and visual performances. Later that month, a special concert concept, brahms vs. radiohead, encouraged a decidedly younger crowd to explore musical geniuses separated by more than a century. Tapa's final performance before the covid crisis was a march 2020 concert of music by mahler and brahms. Presented to an empty hall and broadcast as the organization's first-ever livestreamed concert, the program was a love letter from the musicians of the Toledo symphony to the world in a time of crisis. Despite the realities of the covid-19 pandemic, the organization finished its fiscal year intact, with staff and musicians retained and salaries sustained. This was a special and intentional commitment to our new organization and presented a creative challenge to persevere and identify new ways to serve our community. Despite the realities of the covid pandemic, tapa's staff and performers concluded 2019-2020 season with much to be proud of.
