Program areas at Theatre Communications Group

Tcg grant programsthrough a series of philanthropic partnerships, tcg distributes grants to theatres and individuals each year. By making funds available to organizations, individual artists, and administrators, tcg is able to provide development opportunities for a growing body of professionals and help build and connect a new generation of practitioners for the field. Programs during fy 22 include the fox foundation resident actor fellowships; the willa kim costume design scholarship, the alan schneider director award; the rising leaders of color program; and thrive! Uplifting theatres of color -- a multi-year program designed by tcg and funded by the doris duke charitable foundation to provide unrestricted funds to us-based theatres of color.
Member servicestcg conducts research for and about the not-for-profit Theatre field to assess the changing needs and conditions of the Theatre community, chronicle the field's growth, support national advocacy efforts and create resources to aid Theatre professionals in their work. Tcg also provides field-wide leadership by representing the field in Washington, dc, by advocating on a range of issues, including nea appropriations, covid-relief efforts, arts education funding, tax incentives for charitable giving, the visa process for international artists, funding for cultural exchange, and protecting performing arts technology. Tcg held two convenings during fy22 that brought together Theatre professionals from across the u.s. Virtually and in person to share their knowledge on trends and challenges in the field. In the fall of 2021, we had two virtual summits with a fierce commitment to action, "advocacy & financial resilience and "climate action in a global landscape," as well as an in-person event in nyc, "emerging from the cave: artists lead the way, a tcg forum." The forum focused on artists as innovators, visionaries, and problem solvers in partnership with jesse cameron alick, who the sundance institute commissioned to conduct an independent research study in this area. From june 15-18, 2022, the tcg national conference 2022: pittsburgh incorporated a virtual and in-person experience during our first-ever fully hybrid event. Through fluid, action-oriented programming arcs on "redefining our art," "transforming our practices, and "tending to our people." Tcg also offers Theatre leadership connectedness teleconferences to allow geographically disparate members to connect and share knowledge more frequently - which plays a vital role in covid-19 recovery efforts.
Tcg publicationstcg is the largest independent publisher of dramatic text in north america. Our catalog has over 500 titles, including 19 pulitzer prize-winning plays, one nobel prize winner, 11 macarthur "geniuses", and numerous tony, drama desk, and obie award nominations and winners. Tcg books proudly represents over 235 writers who embody excellence in contemporary playwriting and also represent diverse identities of race, ethnicity, gender, and age. Our playwrights and authors are shaping the canon and legacy of modern Theatre. Tcg books has a dual objective: to bring new literary voices to public attention and cultivate individual relationships with its playwrights that nurture their careers. To date, over 5 million copies have been sold. Tcg's industry-leading publication, american Theatre magazine, is the national magazine for the american professional not-for-profit Theatre, informing readers about important work and significant issues affecting Theatre art and practice. The country's only magazine devoted to Theatre; at is committed to strengthening the national Theatre ecology through public access to more equitable arts journalism. The editorial content and podcasts currently operate entirely online at americantheatre.org and reaches over 1 million visitors while covering events that are relevant to the field. The field increasingly looks to at to take on in-depth, inclusive Theatre journalism as news outlets decrease arts coverage and fall out of touch with the evolving Theatre community.
The rising leaders of color (rlc) program is a core tcg professional development program for bipoc, and is an expansion and re-envisioning of tcg's young leaders of color program (ylc), which launched in 2008, and tcg's spark leadership program. The program's structure brings national recognition to a cohort of early-career leaders, creates a learning space for affinity and accountability, and expands their network of empowering relationships with leaders across the country. In 2022 we had six participants from pittsburgh that participated in person for the conference.
