Biological field station programs - in 2022 The institute successfully executed its summer research program. Due to strategic planning, research grants continued to focus on land management and stewardship and The creative arts program replaced The gordon art and nature in words fellowships. Also, The barry county water quality monitoring program was piloted. A total of 4 research projects, 11 artists and writers, and 5 natural resource fellowships were funded, with 23 students receiving support.
Community environmental education programs - community programs continued to provide youth, family, and adult programming in various formats, including virtual, self- guided, in-person, and hybrid (simultaneous virtual and in-person). Virtual/hybrid programming comprised a small percentage (14 programs). The number of mission-based community programs increased by almost 50% compared to previous years due to The addition of multiple mobility- limited, vehicle "hike" tours and additional general hikes. Community program participation numbers were similar to 2019 pre-pandemic numbers. There was a greater focus on programming at The institute or collaborating with outside groups on programming. In addition, The institute continued to expand its youtube channel with additional educational videos and initiated self-guided tours.
School & group programs - in 2022, school programs were still building back to pre-pandemic levels. The institute continued to partner with hastings area schools, and The focus was mainly on supporting The many new elementary teachers as they learned to teach The science curriculum. Field trips were able to resume for most districts starting in april. The institute provided 185 programs, engaged 4,471 students, supported 135 teachers, and worked with 29 schools and education programs. In addition, The institute offered 15 professional development sessions for teachers, including two book study series.
