The greatest strengths of nlp's work continue to be designing and launching new programs and resources for educators and students to collectively push back against misinformation in all its forms. In The last year, we received some of The most respected award recognitions for our work, including:- received The highest honor from The library of congress Literacy awards program, The david m. rubenstein prize, recognizing our outstanding efforts to help people of all ages identify misinformation and help stop its spread.- rumorguard was awarded The american association of school librarians' best digital tools for teaching & learning designation as an innovative fact-checking tool. (continued on schedule o)- checkology won a prestigious webby people's voice award from The international academy of digital arts and sciences in The category of websites and mobile sites - responsible information, which recognizes technologies "that are effectively working to combat disinformation, misinformation, and false or misleading information online. "additional achievements- currently in The post-production phase of The new, updated "introductions to algorithms" lesson on The checkology virtual classroom featuring tech journalist mia sato as our subject matter expert. When completed, The lesson will reflect how algorithms function in our information landscape, touching on issues such as algorithmic filtering, steering and bias, privacy and transparency, and The rise of generative ai tools. Learning outcomes will prioritize The opportunities and challenges of algorithms and artificial intelligence, including how these tools and processes cater to and shape our interests, ideas and perceptions. It will also provide students with a clear-eyed look at how algorithms can help both navigate and complicate an already complex information ecosystem and help them use algorithms deliberately rather than passively in ways that are empowering rather than manipulative or exploitative.- updated 78 videos on checkology with closed captioning to be inclusive and accessible to all learners.- added three classroom listening guides for educators to complement The newest episodes of our is that a fact?podcast: "opinion creep: how facts lost ground in The battle for our attention", "flagrant foul: misinformation and sports and "chatbots are supercharging search: are we ready? ".- partnered with time for kids magazine to create "News matters," a three-week unit plan for grades 3-6. Using tiktok content designed by nlp staff, The lessons build foundational News Literacy skills and give students The opportunity to apply these skills with assessments throughout.- designed and published three new infographics: "6 things to know about ai" for educators and The public; "in brief: News media bias" for educators and The public, and "breaking News checklist" for educators and The public.- piloted a model for embedding News Literacy education at The district level through our new initiative, The district fellowship program. In The first year, fellows design a sustainable and actionable district-wide plan to implement targeted News Literacy instruction. In The second year, they pilot The program in preparation for district-wide adoption. The program aims to create replicable News Literacy models for other districts in states across The country. By september 2024, this program will result in eight school districts across The country implementing plans for News Literacy instruction as part of district-wide curriculum, potentially impacting 158 schools and over 89,000 students.- in addition to The district fellowship program, nlp partnered at The state level to provide News Literacy training webinars to The following: Arizona department of education; boards of cooperative educational services of new york state; California department of education; Colorado department of education; Connecticut association of school librarians; Kansas library systems; Nevada department of education; Utah education network and their state board of education; Washington department of education, and Wisconsin department of public instruction. Nlp also worked with The Delaware department of education to align our resources with their media Literacy standards so nlp can be a featured resource on their website.- secured an official partnership as The primary provider of News Literacy education for older adults with aarp, one of The nation's largest learning resources for people over age 50.- this year's fifth annual national News Literacy week (presented with The e.w. Scripps company), which focused on The local News crisis, produced 1,000 media hits mentioning nnlw, scripps and/or nlp and had a potential reach of over 1 billion (combined reach across all media, including print circulation, television viewership and average online visitors). Paid digital marketing had more than 3.6 million impressions. The campaign landing page had over 30,000 unique visitors. More than 40 partner organizations participated.- produced additional public awareness campaigns in response to global events, including two newly launched resource hubs News Literacy in The age of ai, and navigating misinformation about The israel-hamas war.
