Program areas at The Legal Clinic
Immigration Legal Services: Providing free or low-cost services to low-income immigrants and migrants in Hawaii. Services include client screening and intake, attorney advice and counsel, legal representation in federal immigration court, assistance with status adjustment applications, and training law students, pro bono attorneys and other volunteers in helping with specific services. In 2023, TLCs legal team provided legal services to 120 state residents on 222 immigration related matters, without charging clients attorney fees. TLC attorneys also prepared for hearings in immigration court and attended client interviews at USCIS. TLC staff assisted over 30 survivors of the Lahaina wildfires on Maui with applying for replacement of immigration status documents and other relief resources.
Education & Advocacy: In 2023, TLC co-hosted bimonthly meetings of nonprofit immigration legal service providers in Hawaii to share resources and promote collaboration. Together with other legal service providers, TLC put on two immigration law workshops on Hawaii Island, and held two webinars viewed by 4,000+. TLC also provided testimony for select state bills that were being considered by the State Legislature in 2023.
