Food and nutrition: The Center opened its new food pantry, Jonnycake market, in april 2022. The new market replicates a true grocery store experience where shoppers can select The items themselves. The pantry also supports our school vacation meals program during out-of-school time and our delivery program for homebound seniors and households. The Center also partnered with The ri community food bank and The university of rhode island to offer healthy cooking classes to youth, adults, and people with diabetes.
Economic security: The Center provided more than $85,000 in financial assistance to landlords, utility and fuel companies, and local mechanics to prevent eviction and homelessness, utility shut offs, and a lack of transportation to work and doctor's appointments. During The 2022 tax season, we helped 200 filers prepare their tax returns and piloted a credit building program with westerly community credit union. Our member services staff also helps members with household budgeting and navigating government benefits.housing: The Center continued its work through Jonnycake neighbors, which is twofold. First, we offer intense housing search and application assistance to people in need of housing. This includes assistance with security deposits and first month's rent when necessary. We also acquired several multi-unit dwellings to provide service-enhanced housing to local families. Community health: The Center employs a community health worker who is responsible for helping local households meet basic needs, address health disparities and work to improve The social determinants of health, and empower local leaders to become leaders and decision-makers.children's enrichment: The Center works with community partners including The university of rhode island, boys and girls club of newport, ymca of south county, and others to offer child and youth enrichment activities including summer camp and after school opportunities.
