The Greater Birmingham Humane Society promotes the humane treatment of animals and people through education, advocacy, and services. They operate the GBHS Spay/Neuter & Critical Care Clinic, providing veterinary medical services and spay/neuter surgeries for their pets and those of low-income, veteran, senior, and chronically ill pet owners. They are the oldest and largest animal shelter in Alabama with one of the highest intake shelters in the US. GBHS manages animal care and control for Jefferson County, the largest county in the state, and majority of municipalities within it.

Program areas at The Greater Birmingham Humane Society

Gbhs is The oldest and largest animal shelter in Alabama, and one of The highest intake shelters in The u.s. gbhs manages animal care and control (acc) for jefferson county, The largest county in The state, and a majority of The municipalities within The county. Acc impounded and cared for more than 10,000 abused, neglected, and abandoned pets this year. Our animal control officers provide 24/7 response. This year we responded to 531 after-hours emergency calls. We vaccinate all animals upon intake. We also trap, s/n, vaccinate, and return feral cats which has saved thousands of cats since The program's inception in 2018. Gbhs won The contract to manage The animal shelter in The city of jasper. City of jasper annual intake is approximately 1,500 animals.
Gbhs' adoption and outreach center adopted out over 3,700 dogs and catsduring The current tax year, transported 1,881 dogs out of state, andfostered more than 1,540 animals. Our volunteers and shelter animals presentedanti-violence and Humane education classes at local schools and in front of hundreds of students. Our pet pantry provided pet food and verterinary care to over 900 poor and home bound pet owners and almost 2,500 animals.
We operate The gbhs spay/neuter & critical care clinic which provides all veterinary medical services and spay/neuter surgeries for gbhs pets and The pets of low-income, veteran, senior, and chronically ill pet owners. Our hospital also runs The #1 externship program for auburn university's college of veterinary medicine. This program is also provided to vet students at The tuskegee college of veterinary medicine. The externship runs 2-weeks and provides students with soft tissue surgical training and exposure to shelter medicine. Gbhs veterinarians and students completed more than 4,870 spay/neuter surgeries and more than 120 acute care surgeries for injured strays or abused animals. The hospital has served more than 12,160 animals this past year.
