The Fellowship BMEC advances the recruitment, development, and retention of black male educators in schools throughout Greater Philadelphia through professional membership and activism. The center for black educator development launched The Freedom Schools Literacy Academy, an 8-week summer literacy and apprenticeship program serving elementary, middle, and high school students. During the program, 85% of the high school and college students participated actively.

During The program 85% of The high school and college students expressed a greater interest in teaching than when they started, and The elementary school students showed significant gains in their literacy skills. During The year, The center provided professional development workshops and one on one teacher coaching to teachers in The city of philadelphia.
