Program areas at The Civilians

The Civilians 2023-24 Seasons artistic services and new works development engaged 2,867 live audience members, employed 159 theater artists and collaborators, and reached an additional 12,000 through our online journal, Extended Play.Highlights included the world premiere of Artificial Flavors at 59E59 Theatres. This production, running for 30 performances, explored human-machine creativity through AI and received critical acclaim.New work development featured Martha Redbones Conversations, addressing intergenerational activism in Indigenous communities; Anne Washburns The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire, examining American intentional communities; and Sex Variants, exploring LGBTQIA+ histories. Our public programming also included readings, concerts, and community conversations, such as the Mr. Burns 10th Anniversary Reading at Playwrights Horizons and The Gulf Industry Reading with Manhattan Theatre Club.Extended Play and the R&D Group further expanded our reach. The R&D Group concluded its 13th year with the FINDINGS Reading Series, which brought together 200 attendees and 50 artists to share and develop new works.
