Program areas at The Breakthrough Institute
Research Programs: Breakthroughs Climate and Energy program focuses on four major themes: climate science and policy; advanced nuclear energy; innovation, decarbonization, and energy transitions; and energy for development. Our analysts continue to be published in major news outlets and academic journals. Our advanced nuclear team continues to support nuclear commercialization efforts, especially via engagement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Our energy for development team promotes pragmatic solutions to the dual challenges of poverty and climate change in poor countries. Our Food and Agriculture program makes the case for technological, intensive agriculture as a pathway toward a sustainable food system. We opened a new office in DC in 2022, which reflects our increasing involvement in policy work.
Our communications program encompasses regular publication of research and commentary on our website, our flagship quarterly publication the Breakthrough Journal, staff writing at other outletsincluding in academia, the peer-reviewed literature, and mainstream mediaand public speaking and social media.
Events: Network building is one of the principal ways Breakthrough makes change in the world, and we primarily execute on this through our events. Each year, we host a West Coast event (the Breakthrough Dialogue) and an east coast policy-focused event (our annual Ecomodernism conference). We also host occasional issue-focused workshops and virtual webinars.
