Program areas at Tenants Union of Washington

Education: empowerment-based multilingual education and assistance to help Tenants learn their rights and take action to resolve housing problems. Trained non-attorney tenant counselors offer free phone andin-person counseling services to assist people with questions aboutlandlord-tenant laws and discuss strategies to prevent housing loss. Tenant education program served 6,800.
In 2002 the multicultural, multilingual benson east Tenants' association (beta) became the first tenant organization in the nw to become low-income tenant-owners. The benson east project brings together a partnership of beta, the tu, the channel foundation and the low income housing institute. These partners created an innovative ownership structure in which the Tenants have control over the day-to-day operations of the development, and all proceeds will benefit future tenant ownership campaigns. Benson east Tenants association served 32.
Organizing: the tu organizes and wins grassroots campaigns to improvehousing conditions, fight housing discrimination, expand affordablehousing, and to improve housing policies. Tenant organizing program served 650.
