Program areas at Steppenwolf Theatre Company
In support of our core artistic mission, we seek to 1) highlight our world-class ensemble through thought provoking, year-round performances, 2) create and develop innovative new works for the stage, and 3) celebrate the learner, maker, and appreciator in each of us through our education and community engagement programming.steppenwolf's programming shifted during the two years of forced closure due to the covid-19 pandemic. In november 2021, as part of our return to the stage, Steppenwolf unveiled the 50,000 square foot liz and eric lefkofsky arts and education center. This newly expanded campus and arts and education center features the ensemble theater, a 400-seat round theater; the loft, a dedicated floor of classrooms and galleries for teen-centered learning; a wine bar; and a sidewalk lounge. It has been intentionally designed to increase the social gathering spaces where artists, teens, and audiences can find community and engage in learning and conversation. Built with the highest accessibility standards, the expanded campus invites new relationships with its patrons, neighborhood, and city. Steppenwolf's return to live performance in the 2021/22 season was met with covid tidal waves, historic inflation, and the aftermath of the great resignation, which contributed to increased operating costs and decreased revenue sources. Operating expenses of $18,938,000 in 2021/22 were 71% higher than 2020/21. However, earned revenue sources only covered 22% of 2021/22 operating expenses. Revenue from federal and state government funding sources, including ppp loans and the shuttered venue operators' grant sustained the organization in 2021/22, helping cover the loss of earned income. Continued donor outreach and engagement, including an in-person fundraising gala in may 2022, led to steady contributed income levels for 2021/22. To support future operations, Steppenwolf is re-examining our operations to expand our audience and donor base, streamline our programmatic operations, and establishing a strong case for support to close our capital campaign and defease our construction debt.
