Program areas at Stand Up America
Stand Up America advocates for progressive government policies that will strengthen our democracy and increase access to voting and opposes conservative policies that threaten our democracy and our freedom to vote. We educate and mobilize our members using email, sms, and social media communications, as well as mobilize activists outside our community through peer-to-peer texting, digital ads, and a robust social media influencer program.in 2022, Stand Up America's members took action in every state to combat voter suppression and build a more representative democracy. Together, they made more than 25,000 constituent calls, sent over 547,000 emails to lawmakers, and submitted over 30,000 letters to the editor in support of state and federal measures to protect and expand voting rights and strengthen our democracy.at the federal level, we worked to reform the supreme court, ban congressional stock trading, prevent future presidential corruption, reform the electoral count act, pass federal voting rights legislation, and reform the filibuster.we began 2022 in a continuing fight to pass federal voting rights legislation. In january of 2022, we helped our community members make over 6,000 constituent calls and send nearly 19,000 emails urging congress to end the filibuster and pass federal voting rights legislation. In anticipation of and response to the supreme court's dobbs, nys rifle and pistol association, and west Virginia decisions stripping americans of their fundamental freedoms, we continued our work to add cosponsors and build support for the judiciary act, which would add four seats to rebalance the overly partisan supreme court and protect our freedoms. We ran digital ads to educate the public about the danger posed by the current court and the need to both rebalance and impose a code of ethics on the court. We helped the public and our community send over 300,000 emails to their legislators in support of court expansion and a code of ethics, make over 3,000 calls to congress, and submit tens of thousands of letters to the editor, hundreds of which were published in local papers across the country. We worked to pass legislation banning congressional stock trading, including driving over 170,000 constituent emails and 1,700 calls to members of congress from our community and via national digital ads. We also worked to educate the public via digital ads, an earned media outreach campaign, op-eds, and a letter to the editor campaign that helped our members publish dozens of letters to the editor across the country. We put even more pressure on lawmakers to pass legislation through direct lobbying and opinion polling that demonstrated overwhelming public support for a ban on congressional stock trading.we also worked to prevent future presidential corruption by pushing for the passage of the protecting our democracy act, helping our members send over 8,200 emails to their members of congress in support of the legislation, and publish over 100 letters to the editor in local papers across the country. We also conducted polling to demonstrate public support for the protecting our democracy act to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.at the end of 2022, we engaged in a last-minute successful push to finally pass electoral count act reform. Our members logged over 3,000 calls and emails to congress to help get the legislation over the finish line before legislators went home for the year.at the state level, we worked in coalition with local organizations to successfully help pass a state-level voting rights act in new york, and on still ongoing efforts to pass legislation restoring voting rights to currently incarcerated individuals in Illinois and same day voter registration in new jersey. We also helped pass prop 2 in Michigan, a sweeping ballot measure to protect and expand voting rights, and a ballot measure in oakland which created a new public financing system called democracy dollars. Finally, we mobilized to fight against voter suppression laws in state legislatures and on the ballot in Arizona, Florida, and Georgia. By the end of 2022, Stand Up America's community members had logged nearly 17,000 constituent calls and emails to state lawmakers in support of state-level voting rights acts in new york and new mexico, legislation to permanently restore voting rights to thousands of incarcerated individuals in Illinois, allow voters in new jersey to register to vote on election day, and in opposition to voter suppression legislation in Florida, Georgia and Arizona. Our volunteers sent over 700,000 peer to peer text messages to voters in Michigan and Arizona in support of Michigan's prop 2 and in opposition to multiple ballot measures limiting direct democracy and restricting the freedom to vote in Arizona. In many of the above state level legislative efforts, Stand Up America also provided digital support to local organizations, from setting Up call lines and email tools for use by local advocates outside our community to running peer to peer programs for ballot measure committees. In some instances we also provided earned media support, including outreach to spanish media.in 2022, we also expanded our celebrity influencer program, including our non-partisan voter registration efforts on social media.
