Program areas at Space Gallery
SPACE Gallery is a contemporary arts organization that supports artists in presenting live music andperformances, visual arts exhibitions, film screenings, and community events. In 2022, the organizationhosted 162 public programs, 17 exhibitions, 24 offsite events, and 17 private arts educational events with over 25,000 total visitors (15,500 were event attendees).
SPACE's Congress Street landmark building is also home to 31 below-market artist studios, including a collective printmaking shop and an artist residency studio. Studios are offered annually via a Rent Free Studio program to outstanding local artists who are Black, Indigenous, or another identity of color, selected by a local jury of alumni of the program. SPACE maintains and identifies as an active artist community, offering programmatic opportunities including open studios, classes, artist talks, workshops, subsidized studios, and artist residencies for Maine and national artists.
The Kindling Fund is a statewide granting program for artist project grants that engage the public inmeaningful ways outside of traditional arts institutions. It is part of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Regional Regranting Network. In 2022, SPACE expanded its grant-making as a local arts agency subgranter as part of the American Rescue Plan Act through the National Endowment for the Arts.
