Program areas at SWIA

SWIA provides program support and staffing for the Research Program, the Coastal Training Program, and the Stewardship Programs at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR) with an emphasis on coastal resiliency in the face of climate change.
SWIA provides an invasive plant control program in the Tijuana River Valley. The invasive plant control program began in 2001 to strategically remove three invasive plant species from the TRNERR river valley, re-vegetate the areas with native plant species, and monitor those areas for possible re-emergence of non-native plants and maintain the viability of native re-vegetation.
SWIA maintains wetlands restoration and protection projects in TRNERR, South San Diego Bay, and Seal Beach. Planning phase continues for further wetland restoration in the Reserve and includes pre-construction monitoring, surveying, design, and engineer support. SWIA is in its eleventh year of monitoring flora and fauna recovery at the South San Diego Bay post-restoration. SWIA's wetlands restoration and protection projects also include continual monitoring support of Los Peñasquitos Lagoon.
