Program areas at Southern Maryland RC&D Board
Nrcs / RC&D partnership conservation technical assistance (soil technicians & program support specialists): RC&D has an active partnership with nrcs to provide technical support to the local soil conservation districts throughout the state of Maryland. During fy 23, RC&D employed three (3) individuals that were based out of local soil conservation offices through the state, and managed by nrcs staff. The positions include 3 program support specialists.
Pax river shoreline: Southern Maryland RC&D has partnered with the us navy and qualified contractors to design, permit, and construct a 4,870-ft living shoreline project that will enhance the military resilience of naval air station patuxent river (nas pax), protect critical habitat for the at- risk northern diamondback terrapin, and maintain important recreational space and water access in short supply to the surrounding communities. RC&D manages the project through a cooperative agreement with the us navy. Funding was provided through a 2021 repi challenge grant award, the us navy, and a 2024 nfwf coastal resilience grant. RC&D complies with all reporting requirements for the funding organizations.
Rural legacy / repi conservation easement program: RC&D has partnered with the county, the state, & the navy to administer each of their land preservation programs in st. marys and calvert counties. RC&D works closely with each of the partners, and the landowners, to negotiate, process, and monitor land preservation easements. In order to effectively administer the land preservation programs, RC&D temporarily utilizes a portion of its operating capital to secure the documents required by the funding organizations during the due-diligence period. Those funds, identified as incidentals, is reimbursed to RC&D from dnr once the easement is approved at the state level. RC&D continued to comply with all reporting requirements for all three funding organizations.
Other program accomplishments include various projects with state and local county governments.
