Program areas at Shenandoah Valley Battlefields foundation
Preservation and interpretation of civil war battlefield sites: the Foundation maintains numerous historic preservation properties including approximately 5,279 acres of battlefield land throughout the Shenandoah Valley, and twelve historic structures. Historic collections and artifacts from the civil war era are protected, cared for and preserved. The Foundation provides grants for organizations participating in battlefield preservation and interpretation. The Foundation's offices are located on the second floor of the strayer house in downtown new market Virginia, one of the historic preservation buildings in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. A civil war orientation center, small gift shop and visitor information center is located on the first floor. The Foundation coordinates numerous volunteers who are engaged in the ongoing efforts. The Foundation owns and operates a civil war museum in downtown winchester and a visitors center located at the third winchester battlefield.
